The total cost of ownership of a capability or asset is heavily influenced by the through-life support cost. Up to 70% of the cost of total ownership are incurred after the asset or capability enters service through to its retirement. Through life supportability needs to be designed into the asset and capability to influence the life cycle cost and design the support model to achieve the desired level of availability and asset sweating.

Once in service, support cost optimisation requires an in-depth understanding of supply chain dynamics, system design and failure modes, and the influence of the operating environment on the asset availability.
