The AP-3C Orion aircraft is the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Between 2010 and 2015, the RAAF performed several staged upgrades to improve the aircrafts capability and safety including the integration of an electro-optic enhancement and a tactical common data link, replacement of the acoustic processing system, installation of a mission data recorder, integration of a Traffic Collision Avoidance System and update of the avionics processor software.
Nova Systems was engaged to plan, manage, conduct and report on the Acceptance Test and Evaluation (AT&E) of the upgrades. Nova Systems developed detailed, phased approaches to testing in comprehensive Acceptance Test Plans. The team developed and executed the subordinate Acceptance Test Procedures, which enabled the upgrades to be released into service on schedule and budget. Nova Systems expertise in test and evaluation provided highly effective management of the AP-3C AT&E activities.
Nova Systems was able to advise on the best methodology to verify requirements and plan an integrated test activity that provided significant schedule benefit. Nova Systems’ conduct and reporting of the AT&E activities as an organisation independent of the system design agency enabled the RAAF to reduce oversight of the AT&E activities and rely on Nova Systems’ independence when making compliance assessments. The test and evaluation expertise provided by Nova Systems enabled the acceptance test activities to be combined and streamlined and limit any program delays.
