Media Article - Nova Systems works on cyber resilience for defence

Apr 21, 2017

Media Article

For the last 14 months Nova Systems has been working across the full capability lifecycle to support Defence in delivering resilient systems that provide a greater chance of mission success when operating in cyber denied environments.

According to the company’s general manager (Communications, Information & Space) Nick Pengelly, a systems engineering based Cyber Security Capability maturity model has been developed based on Defence and industry best practice to establish the maturity of system design, implementation and governance.

“Our Cyber Security consultants have designed a cyber security range to keep abreast of emergent Information and Communication Technology (ICT) technical vulnerabilities,” Pengelly said. “The Cyber Range functions like a digital battlefield, not just a weapon ‘range’ or sandbox for training in a specific tool.”

The range aims to strengthen the stability, security and performance of infrastructure used by cyber professionals, utility providers, military and aviation specialists.

“A key attribute of the Cyber Range is having full control over its infrastructure, and by using real world artefacts, it can be driven with robust user activity models to provide realistic behavior,” Pengelly said.

He added this behaviour can be used as an accurate model to assist in mission analysis, concept of operations, detailed design, subsystem verification, system validation, maintenance and mission to achieve real success.

The Cyber Range capabilities will be extended to cover:

• Replication, of complex and diverse networks for civilian and military clients;
• enablement of a realistic testing facility for Internet and Internet of Things (IoT) vulnerability research and training;
• The development and deployment of cutting edge cyber testing capabilities;
• A virtual environment for the quantitative, qualitative and realistic assessment of potentially ground-breaking cybertechnologies for research and development; and
• an environment for cyberwarfare training, cybertechnology development, cybertechnology deployment.

Pengelly explained the range and Nova’s capability assurance will provide a means of assessing the risk of operational scenario achievement; tracing possible Cyber Security issues and likely impacts back to the Systems of Systems interfaces, Mission System architecture, Training scope and Organisational Standard Operational procedures.

“We’re effectively reducing the risk so as to provide better value for money outcomes for Defence in the delivery of capability outcomes.”

Nova Systems Is Using Aerospace Disruptive Technologies To Help Solve Water Sector Challenges

Nova Systems, a leading edge WIA member, is an international Adelaide-head quartered professional solutions provider with a high-tech heritage, bringing the seemingly disparate world of defence and aerospace to addressing complex problems in the water sector.

Nova’s Water Sector Leader, Lachlan McInnes has spent 15 years within the defence industry, including time with Boeing in the US, and says the experience has been extraordinarily valuable in tackling the problems Nova works on in the water sector.

Lachlan says the parallels between aerospace and water arise from the common issue of applying innovation and disruptive technology to deliver business advantage such as extending the life of ageing assets and infrastructure.

“I’ve undertaken work with P3 Orions based at RAAF Edinburgh and one of the critical factors was finding innovative ways of maintaining the capability well beyond its planned service life, ensuring they still had a valid and valuable role to play within the overall remit of the Australian Defence Force”, Lachlan says.

“It was that experience, and others like it, which helped shape my approach to the water industry. In many cases, we are dealing with an ageing asset which cannot be cost effectively replaced but needs to be maintained by the smart use of technology, leading edge engineering techniques and a clear understanding of the real problems that are impacting our clients’ businesses.

“Defence has been tackling problems like this for decades and the approaches and processes which have evolved in that time are highly applicable to other complex sectors such as water.

“One of the things I learnt at Boeing was the importance of spending efficiently to meet the needs of the user, and that’s another lesson that is very important in how Nova works in the water sector.

“Implementing new technology may involve risk, and often businesses are not prepared to manage the uptake of new and innovative technologies. Nova draws on its heritage in aerospace and defence to apply a structured approach to introducing new technologies and services to meet reliability, safety, and client value objectives.

“We use the techniques from our aerospace experience; and what we have learnt in how to adopt and adapt technology for the best result for the client”.

From its head office base in Mile End, South Australia, Nova Systems employs over 450 staff worldwide with operations in Australia, New Zealand, UK, Singapore, and Europe – enabling technology to deliver business outcomes for its clients across the Defence, Utilities, Energy, Transport and Communication sectors.

With its origins as an aerospace and defence capability assurance business; Nova Systems has had direct experience in the water sector for over 15 years, through this long-term relationship Nova is able to understand the heart of the challenges faced by the sector, enabling it to focus on solving the problems that really matter.

“Nova Systems’ vision is to be “the international “go to” professional services company at the heart of our clients’ success”.  We are always learning; and what we learn in the aerospace sector positions us well for a leadership role in water”.

Support To Snowy Hydro SouthCare

Mar 20, 2017

We all want to know that help will be there, when people need it most.  That’s why the staff of Nova Systems and QinetiQ stepped up today, donating close to fifteen thousand dollars to support Snowy Hydro SouthCare.

On hand to present the cheque to the SouthCare Trust were Scott Miller and Jonathan Couldrick from Nova Systems and Craig Fallhaw from QinetiQ. “By working together the two companies were able to smash previous fundraising amount for SouthCare” said Dr Couldrick, the Nova Group InNOVAtion Manager. “The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter has touched the lives of our close friends and family and this is a small way to show our appreciation.”

‘It’s this sort of support that’s made possible almost 7000 life-changing missions over the last 18 years,’ said Carol Bennett, CEO of the SouthCare Trust.

Snowy Hydro SouthCare is a community resource on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  It is a vital service to our region’s one million residents and five million visitors each year. The SouthCare crew can tell almost 7,000 stories of people in situations of dire need being provided critical medical assistance.

On April 2, a new era begins for Canberra and the surrounding region with the arrival of a brand new state of the art, purpose built, AW139 helicopter.  The aircraft will be one of eight that will respond to missions across Southern NSW operating from four bases, Bankstown, Wollongong, Canberra and Orange.  The aircrafts deliver the latest in performance, safety and innovation – assisting ACT Ambulance helicopter doctors and paramedics to reach patients in remote areas, faster than ever before. Each aircraft will be fitted with the latest aviation and safety technology, including single engine performance and a greater range, night vision technology and a larger working space for the medical crew in the rear of the aircraft.  The facilities on board enable life-saving operations and major medical interventions to be carried out immediately.

“It’s because of overwhelming community support – like we see today from Nova Systems and QinetiQ – that the ACT and NSW governments now see aero-medical services as an essential service.  They have committed to fund future operations without the reliance on community fundraising.” “Few charities fully achieve their mission. The SouthCare Trust has, thanks to so many people over so many years. It’s a unique and outstanding success story,” said Ms Bennett.
