The Automatic Train Protection (ATP) Program will implement a Level 1 limited supervision application of the European Train Control System (ETCS), that will provide additional safety through speed supervision whilst relying on the existing signalling system to provide movement authorities to trains.
The ATP upgrade will be installed as an adjunct to the existing signalling system, to provide an additional layer of protection through automated braking intervention. These upgrades will increase safety of the network and enable further optimisation of rail usage that will allow more services to be safely operated on the existing network.
Nova Systems has provided engineering systems and safety assurance for the ATP system, through the principal engineering contractor Downer EDI, for design, implementation and commissioning of the ATP system from Berowra to Wickham. This project, being the first in a staged roll out across the entire Sydney and interconnected network, faced many challenges including:
- evolving engineering standards and compliance frameworks;
- developing competency and accreditation processes; and
- evolving scope of roll out.
Throughout these challenges Nova Systems has contributed to the successful delivery of ATP upgrade through collaboration with our customer and the asset owner, resulting in successful completion of works in early 2020.
