Ergon Energy is a corporation owned by the Government of Queensland that distributes electricity to around 700,000 customers across Queensland. Ergon Energy’s ultimate goal for their safety program was to reduce the number of switching and access incidents by ensuring that staff maintain mature safety attitudes and behaviours.
Nova Systems was engaged to provide Safety Critical System and Cognitive Safety Program to address this need. Nova Systems designed a system and program that was specifically designed to overcome the technical safety system challenges relevant to high voltage switching and access in both the field and operational control room environments; within the Electricity Distribution industry with particular regard to cognitive behavioural psychology.
The project consisted of Field/Operational Control Centre (OCC) presentations and a Switching Mentor Program. During rollout of the Field and OCC presentations, Nova Systems collected observations on Ergon’s HV Switching activities. Nova Systems elected to present these observations and associated recommendations to Ergon stakeholders using the Nova Systems Operational Excellence (OEF) Framework. The OEF was discussed in detail with Ergon stakeholders and Ergon commenced implementing recommendations from the OEF. In addition, Nova Systems made observations during the Switching Mentor Program rollout.
These observations and associated recommendations for On-going Support were provided in a detailed report to Ergon. This project was a success and a direct reduction in switching incidents was observed; combined with a vast improvement in a safety culture towards High Reliability Organisation standards. This project highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to a project with a client and dedicated effort to maintaining open lines of communication to ensure Project success.
