In late 2010/early 2011 Nova provided support to Air Force and DMO in developing all the artefacts necessary to support an application for issue of a UASOP for Heron RPA training operations from Woomera, the first time a military UAS would be used operationally in Australia. As part of this work, and for the first time in the ADF, Nova developed methodologies to implement the “Safety Target” approach to make estimates on the levels of risk associated with the conduct of these operations.
The results enabled the RAAF to commence and expand Heron operations from various locations in Australia. Nova has continued to support CASG and RAAF to expand Heron operations to Rockhampton Airport in support of Pitch Black 2015 and operations from RAAF Base Amberley. Nova continues to support Defence in the sustainment of the Heron UAS as a way of maturing our skills to prepare for the introduction of future UAS capabilities.
