Between 2006 and 2010, the Australian Defence Force conducted five suborbital space launches from the Woomera Range. Launched under the HyShot and Hypersonic International Flight Research and Experimentation (HiFIRE) hypersonic programs, the sub-orbital launches were conducted using two stage solid fuel unguided launch vehicles carrying experimental hypersonic payloads.
Nova Systems was engaged by Woomera Range organisation over the 4-year period, to plan and manage the launch activities and provide key safety and operational personnel during the launch. Providing personnel pivotal to the project, Nova coordinated all inputs into the launch process including the launch vehicle provider and operator, payload organisation and other contributing organisations including US regulatory organisations. This required the coordination of multiple Australian and international organisations to meet key staged development and data provision milestones and gateways.
Nova also provided the Range Safety Officer (or Launch Safety Officer) and Flight Safety Officer for all launch activities. The team was responsible for the safe conduct of activities, effectively controlled the launch sequence, was the final approval authority for launch, provided the oversight and review of the flight prediction and wind weighting and ensured that launches were conducted within the safety and operational tolerances required.
Instrumental in the conduct of these launch activities, Nova successfully developed the launch management and approval processes and procedures utilised by the Woomera Range throughout the project and ensured the safe conduct of all launch activities.
