Challenge
Bristow has the following challenges in meeting the operational requirements:
Bespoke mission system with new technologies including BLOS datalink;
Compressed and accelerated delivery schedule; and
Lower-risk delivery solution.
Solution
Nova Systems designed a bespoke mission system solution that is fully customised to Bristow Helicopters’ requirements, building on a mission system architecture that allows the same mission system solution to be compatible with not only the AW139 helicopters deployed to the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard, but also with Bristow’s broader fleet of SAR helicopters including other helicopter types.
Working closely with Bristow to understand their requirements, the bespoke mission system architecture that we designed ensured that it remain equipment agnostic and lays a solid foundation for Bristow’s future vision of how SAR operations will be performed, while retaining the agility to evolve continuously in response to technological changes.
Our solution provides Bristow with a common mission system that provides similar capabilities throughout its fleet, simplifying training and supportability through life. The bespoke solution allows other sensors and capabilities to be integrated to meet the needs of different operational requirements in a lower-risk manner throughout the aircraft life and simplifying in-service upgrades. The equipped aircraft includes an operator centric console and a modular mission computer that provides a consolidated, fused local operating picture, integrating sensor information from the onboard surveillance camera system, automatic identification system, and machine vision camera systems for automatic target identification.
Outcome
With a full suite of tactical communications, broadband connectivity, our mission system provides Bristow with an enhanced ability to perform the Coast Guard mission more effectively. Nova Systems delivered the solution with an integrated design team comprising engineers, operators, supply chain specialists and P3M professionals, complete with mission system level documentation and training, and backed by a maintenance services agreement while the aircraft remain in service.
