Challenge
Rapid advances in computer and gaming technology show excellent potential to revolutionise military training and exercising. This extends well beyond the training of individuals, focusing on high-fidelity complex team training and the conduct of large-scale synthetic training exercises.
Using mission simulators for operational training – from individual training through to team and collective training to large scale synthetic training environments – is a key RAF and UK MOD goal. The aim is to exploit computer, network, modelling and simulation technologies to achieve operational, financial and environmental benefits.
Air was chosen as the Defence environment to lead this revolution in military Force Generation and Sustainment. There was a pressing need to design suitable technical architecture, identify commercial options for implementation of the architecture, and support the RAF in implementing this significant change programme.
Solution
Nova has worked as the MOD’s independent technical expert company on Gladiator since 2012. This was initially through the MOD’s Niteworks Partnership but, since 2018, through direct contract to HQ Air Command. Nova has supported the RAF on all key aspects of Gladiator design and implementation including:
System of systems architecture
Cross domain security solutions
Capability and platform integration plans
Integrated test, evaluation and acceptance plans and implementation
Support to the selected delivery prime in design and manufacture
